Last time I checked, Annabelle Creation was 98% on Rotten Tomatoes now down to 83%. I agree with the latter score. It’s not excellent, but it’s pretty great.
Few of the scares look familiar from horrors like The Autopsy of Jane Doe and Paranormal Activity, so that comes off a little bit cliché.
However, some scares are well-directed and actually frightening. One of them being somewhat a reminder of Jeepers Creepers, the urban legend monster film that gave nightmare to my childhood.
Even though a lot modern horrors now rely too much on jump scares (including this one too actually), I feel like The Conjuring/Insidious universe is consistent in building up effective tension and showing genuinely terrifying sequences that’ll force you to cover your eyes and peek through your fingers. And this one is no exception.
